Every Year Habitat stands ready to respond to people in need. Especially, with the inevitabel flooding in the spring. This year was no different.
Thank you Job Corps and thank you to your supervisors as well. You all are well on your way to being valuable assets to the adult world and you can already outwork most of us.
We would like to thank the Curlew Fire Chief for allowing us to take over his stations grounds. Also the Ferry County Sheriff and department for welcoming us and giving us any assistance we needed.
But I would be negligent if not down right stupid, if I did not mention and thank the young men and women of the Job Corps that came out to help.
Last year during the flooding there was just a handful of us that filled sandbags and it took a quick toll on us all. I responded to Curlew expecting the same deal and when I arrived I quickly found out how wrong I was and how much of a community Curlew, and Ferry County are.
For the past day and a half I have been repeatedly thanked for what "Habitat is doing". One lady even tried to give me a 100 dollars (which I declined).
The truth is, while the Incident Commander did place us in a lead role for the Sandbag filling and distribution, it would be disingenuous to take credit for the indescribable hard work the "kids" from Job Corps did.
They literally filled thousands of bags, loaded bags and delivered bags. They were amazing workers and they are an indispensable asset to the community. They did, what we could not have done without them.
Last night myself and my other Habitat Partner took care of people needing Sand Bags up until about 1am. The reality is, the only reason that wasn't the Job Corps workers too was because I sent them home despite their eagerness to stay all night.
They worked in cold rain and hot sun and they did it knowing they were helping the community.
Today, I was called for help with the flooding in Barstow. Not being able to leave at that moment myself I informed the Habitat Cvp team and they sent people out to help. I then walked outside and asked the Job Corps supervisor if he thought he could help. Within the hour, they had a busload of "kids" headed from Curlew to Barstow to help fill over 1000 bags. Not even a hesitation.
So while I appreciate the thanks towards myself, our team and Habitat and yeah, we filled some bags and loaded some trucks and delivered some bags too.......don't forget about those kids that showed up to serve their community. They deserve all the credit you can give them and i have made sure to tell anyone with ears and now hopefully anyone with eyes the same.
